Procedures to get your own unique ITN number

Contact your customs broker and inform them that you are ready to import your vehicle. There are multiple routes one might take when purchasing a vehicle in the USA, each of which necessitates a unique set of paperwork. Your broker’s documentation requests will vary based on who sold you the car and how you want to put it to use.

All non-residents who need an ITN number but are not qualified for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) (for example, if they do not have a permit that allows them to work in Canada) are issued an Individual Tax Number by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). To submit taxes in Canada, you’ll need to obtain this number.

If you are importing a car for personal use from a private sale, your broker will need the following details from you:

  • A sales invoice
  • An official car title copy (front and back)
  • The importer’s passport, or at least a copy of it, must be provided.
  • Also needed is a copy of the importer’s driver’s licence.

Your broker will need the following details from you if you are buying a car from a dealer for your own use:

  • a receipt for the goods sold
  • Title to the vehicle, in duplicate (front and back)
  • The importer’s passport photocopy is necessary.
  • It is also necessary to submit a copy of the importer’s driver’s licence.
  • Detailed information on the vendor, including their name, location, and how to get in touch

Your broker will need the following details from you when you make a business car purchase through a dealer:

  • A sales invoice
  • Front and back vehicle title copies The dealer’s full name, address, and phone number
  • Specific information on the importer, including their GST number, address, and phone number

If you are buying a car from a private party with the intent of reselling it, your broker will require the following details from you:

  • A sales invoice
  • Title to the vehicle, in duplicate (front and back)
  • Input the importer’s GST number, shipping address, and phone number.
  • Name, address, and phone number of the seller.

Your broker will require the following details from you if you are a Canadian citizen reentering the country driving a vehicle with United States licence plates:

  • Price in the Kelly Blue Book (PDF or print out)
  • Title to the vehicle, in duplicate (front and back)
  • Canadian home address and contact info

If you received your car as a present or inherited it:

  • Pricing in accordance with Kelly’s Blue Book (PDF or print out)
  • Title to the vehicle, in duplicate (front and back)
  • The importer’s passport, or at least a copy of it, must be provided.
  • The importer’s driver’s licence, in duplicate, must also be submitted.
  • A bequest letter or contribution letter
  • Step two is to make your crossing known.

Give your broker the details of your vehicle collection, including:

  • a border station or customs house (you can only cross at the specific border crossing you state)
  • When you plan to cross, on what date in particular (you must cross on this date)

Standard Carrier Alpha Codes (SCACs), together with the name and contact information for the transportation provider being used, are required (a code you or your broker can get from your carrier)

Step 3: There should be a three-day pause.

You can expect your customs broker to submit the required paperwork to US customs and then wait for 72 hours for a response before releasing your ITN. You will receive this number via email or over the phone and can then pick whether or not you want your broker to handle the entirety of the import process for your vehicle.

Anyone who does not have a Social Security Number (SSN) but still needs to file a tax return can do so by using an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN). In contrast to other forms of identification, ITINs are only ever utilised when it comes time to do the tax paperwork. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) holders are not guaranteed access to federal programmes like Social Security or earned income credits, which provide refunds to some low-income filers.
